Catching the Wind

After all the wind we had over the weekend, on Monday morning we decided to get the craft box out and make a wind catcher that we could hang on our (now leafless) apple tree.

We’re not afraid of crafting with toilet roll tubes in our house, although I know outside the home it is frowned upon (I’m guessing it’s an Ofsted thing?!) Alternatively, kitchen roll tubes or tubes from the middle of gift wrap will chop up small and work just the same! We used wool, colouring pens and crayons, tissue paper and some shiny bits and bobs.

Whilst we were doing windy day crafts, I drew some lines on a piece of paper for Seth to cut and make a diamond shape. Voila- a kite! He decorated it and added some tissue paper strips to make the tail. I tied on some wool and we were all set.

We pulled on our wellies and warm coats and headed into the garden. Our wind sock blew about successfully in the wind. Our garden isn’t exactly ideal for kite flying but we had fun throwing it up in the air a few times and it survived to tell the tale so must have been well made.

imageAfter the poor weather this last week, it was good to get outside. Our garden is pretty much waterlogged so we had fun squelching on the grass then marching around the patio making muddy footprints. Seth got out his golf set and had a go at hitting the ball about.

After a while Seth decided it must be snack time – for me a hot brew was an exciting prospect, it seems to have got a lot colder outside all of a sudden – so we headed back indoors for elevenses just in time for Rory waking up from his nap.

    1. I’m sure it would be easy to make a more robust version with a tin can and some bottle tops! I think we’ll be having a go in the summer for our little veggie patch to keep the birds away! #whatevertheweather

  1. Brilliant, I don’t know what the issue is with toilet roll tubes. We use them all the time, they are the perfect size for so many things. Great that you managed to get outside, we could only swim in our garden at the moment!

  2. What a lovely wind sock! You guys look like you had lots of fun playing with it in the garden. I think we need to do something similar soon. The kite looks fab too, I’m useless at flying proper kites, I can’t get them to stay up, we used to run around with plastic bags attached to string when I was wee (which sounds silly!) but they worked so well!
Thanks so much for linking up to #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x

    1. We get Marvel superhero kites from the pound shop. Doesn’t matter then if we wreck them. Think we’ll take one up to the park next week if this weather carries on. Our garden is no good for kite flying! x

  3. I’ve seen quite a few windy day crafts lately. They’re an absolutely brilliant idea to get outdoors and enjoy the weather. I love this, it’s so creative. I had no idea that you couldn’t do toilet roll crafts due to Ofsted either. What is the world coming too! I think this is genius. It looks like you had lots of fun. Thank you so, so much for linking to #whatevertheweather xx

    1. Thanks! I think the loo roll thing is because of Ofsted but I’m not 100% sure. I just know that they can’t use them.

Been playing hide and seek in the park today, brr, even colder this week. I haven’t blogged all week, hoping to have time tonight. Wouldn’t want to miss #whatevertheweather this week x
